Reflections in Quiet Water

Text by David Rains Wallace with engravings by Richard Wagener & Abigail Rorer
Published by Nawakum Press / Mixolydian Editions

David Rains Wallace, recipient of the John Burroughs Medal for The Klamath Knot and author of more than twenty books on conservation and natural history, contributes a suite of new reflections on American wetlands to this edition, the fifth collaboration between Nawakum Press and Mixolydian Editions. His prose provides the intellectual foundation and ecological insight that anchor the work, interwoven with the extraordinary visual representations created by master wood engravers Richard Wagener and Abigail Rorer. Together, this trio—writer and engravers—forms a rare convergence of vision, technique, and sensibility directed toward a celebration of our wetlands.

Wagener and Rorer’s prints are given the clarity, depth, and space they deserve, allowing readers to experience the tactile presence of engraving in its finest form. Such attention reveals the essential truth that fine-press publishing itself is a form of ecological mindfulness: an approach that values slowness, attention, and stewardship.

Reflections in Quiet Water was designed and co-published by David Pascoe of Nawakum Press and Richard Wagener of Mixolydian Editions. Engravings were created and hand printed by Richard Wagener at his studio in Petaluma, California and by Abigail Rorer at The Lone Oak Press in Petersham, Massachusetts. Text printing by Richard Wagener. The typeface is Rialto. Papers are Rives, Zerkall, St. Armand, Liber Charta, Japanese Yamagampi and handmade paper by Heather Peters of the Society of Hermits. Binding and paste papers are by Amy Borezo of Shelter Bookworks in Orange, Massachusetts.

The edition comes in two states: of the sixty copies, thirty-four are numbered in a Slipcase Edition, with twenty-six lettered in an Engraver’s Edition.
